Betty Edwards Johnson ’74 Uses Donor-Advised Fund to Support Tomorrow’s Students

Betty Edwards Johnson ’74From sewing kimonos and managing theater productions to running a Hobart dishwasher, Northfield Mount Hermon gave Betty Edwards Johnson ’74 a variety of enriching experiences. That’s why she has made it a priority to support the school now and in the future.

A scholarship and loan helped Betty attend NMH for four years. Once on campus, she embraced her experience — studying a variety of subjects, working different jobs, and forging longtime friendships with other math and computer students, theater enthusiasts, and Latin scholars. With a cash gift, Betty is now funding an endowed scholarship to give future students the same opportunities.

“I have been a loyal donor because I was a scholarship student,” Betty says. “I wanted to create a scholarship to carry that legacy on.”

Her new fund contributes to This Place, This Moment: The Campaign for Northfield Mount Hermon and NMH’s historic commitment to broaden access and diversity through scholarship support. Her total gift is eligible for a special 1:1 campaign scholarship match that will double the size of Betty’s scholarship.

Betty has also designated NMH as a beneficiary of her donor-advised fund and sponsored a challenge gift during NMH Gives for other members of the Class of ’74 as they prepare for their 50th reunion.

Looking back on her years at Harvey Mudd College and her 44-year career at Chevron, Betty recognizes the vital role NMH played in her life. She urges her fellow alums to consider what the school has meant to them and join her in making a planned gift.
