With CGA Gift, Dan Poteet and Family Gain Income and Tax Benefits While Helping Future Students

Dan Poteet ’59The change Northfield Mount Hermon made in the life of Daniel T. Poteet II was as dramatic as the change in scenery he experienced coming from coastal New Jersey to the NMH campus. That’s why Dan is honoring his alma mater and celebrating his Class of 1959 through a charitable gift annuity.

Growing up, Dan was happy attending school in New Jersey, but teachers kept telling his parents he was smart and should reach high. His mother learned about NMH, and the rest is history.

“Off we went!” Dan says. “The pieces just fell into place, and I’ve been grateful ever since.”

Dan’s gift, funded with appreciated stock, will be used for student scholarships. Because of its income and other advantages, using a CGA “was obvious,” he says. “It made all kinds of sense, so we did it.”

At NMH, Dan gained the skills that helped him achieve a Harvard degree, a Ph.D., and a successful career in higher education administration — including serving as provost at three institutions. By directing their gift to scholarships, he and his family hope to enable future students to enjoy the same opportunities Dan enjoyed.

“If you love the school, make a gift!” Dan says. “You may be surprised how it benefits you at the same time it benefits the school. It did a lot for all of us in the class of 1959. If the school did something good for you, it’s time to repay — at least if possible.”
